The Subaru Forester is one of the most popular and fastest-selling vehicles around, and with plenty of space and fuel efficiency, it’s easy to see why. The Forester has become a pillar in Subaru’s lineup, and it has climbed the ladder in fuel economy to reach an impressive 32 miles per gallon on average. The most-efficient SUVs, of course, are electrified models – either hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or full EVs. The Hyundai Kona Electric leads all comers in this regard, rated at the equivalent of 132. Most crossovers are built on a car platform, which is lighter and easier to drive than a fully boxed off-road truck frame, which is what traditional SUVs were (and some still are) built on. And now, without further ado, the five crossover vehicles with the best fuel economy - including one little hybrid surprise. Volvo V60 (2016) Miles per gallon: 31 Cost: $35,950. Topping off our list of best.

2020 JEEP CHEROKEE 01

Fuel

Jeep's Cherokee earns its lowly position with the one-two punch of being pricier than other compact SUVs and tighter inside than most. (Jeep's one-size-smaller Compass, in fact, has nearly as much interior room as the Cherokee.) Still, the somewhat odd-looking SUV has some redeemable qualities, from its segment-exclusive V-6 engine option to its actual off-road capability (at least in its Trailhawk trim level). Avoid the 2.4-liter base engine if you can—it's quite weak; the optional turbo 2.0-liter or the aforementioned V-6 are much better partners for the Cherokee's bulk. [Read more on the Jeep Cherokee]
